3. What insights and understanding have you gained from the creation and/or processing of this artifact? From this artifact,  I learned about how the child laborers lived and how working with machines became the only thing that they know how to do.

4. Does this artifact reflect your best work and/or ideas? Why, or why not? Although I spent alot of time working on this artifact, this is still my first artifact. Although I think this is good already, I think I'll do better in the future.

THREATENING LETTER FROM LUDDITES; RECEIVED BY MAYOR OF NOTTINGHAM(February 8, 1812)

No attacks were made by the Luddites recently. Although today, a threatening letter was received by the mayor of Nottingham and it was written by General Ludd, the leader of the Luddites. The letter states that, "no more frames will be destroyed while the restrictions on the Prince Regent remain in force, which expire on the 18th inst. when it is hoped his Royal Highness will take the distressed situation of trade into his most serious consideration; and if he fails in this, the last hope of redress, the Luddites will destroy every frame they can find in the country."

Reflection

For this artifact, I read a news article that was about the Luddites threatening letter and then typed another article that is based on that event. This artifact relates to “Class consciousness” because it shows the conflicts between two different social classes. It also relates to the notion of frontier. I spent 50 minutes creating this artifact. After creating this artifact, I learned about what the Luddites were thinking. I think I did a pretty good job on creating this artifact, but I think the article can should be a bit longer. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 4. The impact on my level of happiness would be 4. The impact of my learning would be a 3, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

Artifact #4:  Biographical Spotlight

Queen Victoria was one of the most important women in England's history because she was the queen for about 64 years. She ruled from 6/20/1837-1/22/1901, and that period is called the Victorian era. She was born on 5/24/1819. Queen Victoria is a important women in the history also becasue it is very rare for there to be a female ruler, and that's not just for England, but for every single country in this world. It is said that under the rule of Queen Victoria, the population increased from 13.897 million to 23.528 million. Queen Victoria was also crowned as the Empress of India and she passed away on 1/22/1901

Reflection

For this artifact, I basically read some of Queen Victoria's information and analyzed them. This artifact relates to “Gender roles and the liberation of women because it's talking about important women is the history. It also relates to class consciousness. I chosed Queen Victoria because she was the only person out of the 3 that I have ever heard about. This artifact took me 50 minutes to complete. After creating this artifact, I learned how influential was Queen Victoria. I think I could do a little bit better if I had more information. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 4. The impact of my learning would be a 3, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

Artifact #9:  Students' Free Choice

Mary Love Baptized Halifax, Nova Scotia June 25, 1806. Died January 13, 1866. She was educated in England and continued her studies in art. She began drawing in the 1820’s She married Lieutenant Colonel James Frederick Love July 16, 1825 while he was stationed in New Brunswick. It was after her marriage that her interest in art deepened. In 1826 her works were reproduced by lithographs in the U.S.A. She is considered the first Canadian born artist to have works lithographed.(drawn on stone for printing and reproduction)  Her husband was posted to Great Britain and the Mediterranean before returning to settle with his wife in Lower Canada. In 1856 Mary joined her husband in England where he was Knighted for his military career achievements in 1856,and she became Lady Love.

Maria Morris Miller. Born Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1813.  Died 1875. A woman of talent and determination she used her artistic abilities to open a school in Halifax to teach the young refined women the fine art of drawing. Combining her interest in flora and fauna with her drawing she published 146 paintings of Nova Scotia wildflowers in 1840. “Wild Flowers of North America” was published in 1867. Her works were widely accepted with and exposition at the 1867 Paris exhibition. She is considered the first professional woman artist in Nova Scotia. She was able to have financial earnings to support herself and to gain recognition of her work at a time when women were just beginning to come forward as accomplished individuals and not just daughters and wives!!

Charlotte Mount Brock Schreiber. Born Woodham, England 1834. Died 1922. A painter of the Victorian sentimental era she painted landscapes and figures. Her works exhibited In London, England and Paris, France. She was the loan woman charter member of the Royal Canadian Academy. One of the first women book illustrators in Canada, three children’s books were published in Toronto. She was the first woman on the board of the Ontario School of Art and Design.

Mary Augusta Hiester Reid née Hiester. Born Reading, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. 1854. Died  October 4, 1921. While studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art in the USA she met her future husband, Canadian artist George A. Reid. There was time to study in Paris before the Reid’s settled in Toronto. She was an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists, an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy (women were not allowed to be elected to the Academy) in 1896, and was the first woman painter to have a solo show. In 1916 she became the first woman to serve on the executive council of the Ontario Society of Artists.  Her art legacy includes interiors and murals as well as her landscape paintings. Largely forgotten today, her still life and floral paintings were shining examples of art that was considered acceptable for women of the Victorian era. When she died, the Art Gallery of Toronto launched the largest single retrospective show in its history, a memoriam featuring her works. In 2000-2001 a successful showing of her works was called Quiet Harmony.

Katherine Elizabeth Wallis. Born Peterborough, Canada West (Ontario) 1860. Died December 14, 1957. She studied art in Scotland and England as a young woman. It was h
'  ,er that she would come to love sculpting. She moved to Paris and continued her studies. Her art career was interrupted during World War i when she served as a nurse in the Canadian Hospital in Paris. She was honoured and decorated by both the French and British governments for her services. Her first Canadian exhibition of her work was in 1920. She returned to Paris and in 1929 she received her highest recognition as an artist when she was the first Canadian to be elected Societaire of the Societé Nationale de Beaux Arts for her sculpture titled "La Lutte pour la Vie". She fled from France at the beginning of World War II and settled in Santa Cruz, California in the United States. Samples of her work are held at the National Gallery in Ottawa. She also enjoyed writing verse and published Chips From the Block: Poems in New York in 1955.

Florence Wyle.  Born November 24, 1881. Died 1968.  A sculptor, she preferred to work in her studio, which was once a church. She was a founding member of the Sculptor's Society of Canada in 1928. She was the first woman sculptor to become a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.  She had a love of nature that was reflected in her published poems. 

Reflection

For this artifact, I did some research for some of the female artists during the 19^th century because we usually only think about the male artists. This artifact relates to the human expression through the arts because the artifact itself is talking about art. It also relates to the human mind. I spent about 50 minutes working on this artifact. After completing this artifact, I learned a lot more about a few female artists during the 19^th century. This is not not my best work, cause my best work would probably just be me doing research on “all” the female artists during 19^th century, but that would be too boring so I just did research for a few of the female artists. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 2. The impact of my learning would be a 4, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

Artifact #10:  Cause and Effect: Analytical Writing

     During the 19^th century, a lot of people moved from country sides to cities, not just in England, but everywhere around the world, and the reason they moved is because of urbanization. So what is urbanization? Urbanization is the world advancing into cities, towns and consumption. Which means bringing the world together.

      There are a lot of reasons that cause urbanization, but the main one was industrialization. Industrialization lead to a decline of handmade products, like hand weaving, hand-lace and knitting. The reason why people moved into towns was because they had more opportunities to get a job in the factories, and the factories were built in towns. So during the 19^th century, population in towns increased and population in country sides have decreased.

      Industrialization had not only destroyed the making of handmade products, but also had a lot of other damages. Pollution caused by the machines was a major problem, and it still is now. Also, the workers that worked in the factories were getting sick because they were breathing polluted air and forced to work for long hours non-stop everyday, so alot of people died during that time.

     Although there are a lot of disadvantages to urbanization, there are still some advantages. For example, now our life is easier because we have some things that can't be handmade, like cellphones, which we can use anywhere to communicate with each other. Also, even if it is bad for people to work in factories, at least they have a chance to work and survive.

      There are some advantages and disadvantages for urbanization, but overall, I think it is bad, because to think about it, we are trashing our world with the machine made products, and we are wasting our time using all those electrical products, which gives us less time to do the things that really makes us happy.

Reflection

For this artifact, I typed a essay about the advantages and disadvantages of urbanization, and I choosed to type and essay about urbanization because that was kind of the main thing in during the 19^th century. This artifact relates to “Urbanization: Construction of urban cities because this essay is about the advantages and disadvantages of urbanization. It also relates to the human health. I spent about 1 hour typing this essay. After completing this artifact, I learned a bit more about urbanization, not only during the 19^th century, but also now. This is not not my best work, because I think the essay is not long enough, but I didn't know what else to type. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 2. The impact of my learning would be a 5, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

Artifact #11:  Primary Resource (Students' Choice)

Origin – The author and the person that created this website was John Simkin, and it was created and published in September, 1997.

Purpose – This document exists because it is a resource that students can look at if they need information. The author made the primary source into a website because that way, anyone with a computer can look at the information. I'm guessing that the author thought that students would be the people that would receive this. The document tells us the history of England, and we can't really tell more that is on the surface because it's just some primary information.

Value – We can tell from the source that the author knows a lot of information, not only related to England, but also to a lot of other countries. We can also tell that the information if from the 19^th century. I guess the source was created because the author wanted to share his knowledge about the 19^th century with other people. We can't tell about any controversies or if the author represents any side because it's just primary source. The time the source was created was long after the event, which was the industrial revolution.

Limitation – We can't tell the interviewer's perspective from the source, and we can verify the content by reading the information and looking at the titles. The source does reflect a lot of accurate things in the 10^th century, but we don't know if it reflects anything inaccurately because it's about the conversation between the interviewer and interviewee.

Reflection

For this artifact, I found a website that is full of primary information and did a OPVL for it. This artifact relates to The Universe as Seen through a Microscope becasue this was going on around the world during the industrial revolution. It also relates to the human health. I spent about 1 hour working on this artifact. After completing this artifact, I learned a lot more about industrialization during 19^th century in England. This is my best work because I spent a long time working on this and the only way to improve it is probably just to make it longer, but I think this is good enough. The impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 3. The impact of my learning would be a 4, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

Artifact #12:  Idea page

 

Reflection 

For this artifact, I basically took pictures of my idea pages and posted it on blogger. This artifact relates to relates to “Evolution and issues of Religion and Science” because the two pages of idea pages is talking about technology and religion. It also relates to Urbanization: Construction of urban cities. I spent about 20 minutes working on this artifact. After writing those idea pages and watching the video “The story of stuff”, I learned a lot more about technology improving and where our stuff comes from. This is not my best work because in my idea pages, I do not have very important new ideas written down. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 3. The impact of my learning would be a 5, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 4.

Artifact #13:  Gapminder Analyzation


United Kingdom

1) Income per person vs. life expectancy
The graph shows that during the 19th century, the income per person and lifeexpectancy are not in direct ratios, which was different than what I thought it would be. From 1845 to 1849, the potato famine started in Ireland, and the life expectancy dropped, and in 1849, there were of wars going on between England and other countries. The two example clearly shows that even if the income grows, the life expectancy might not grow due to some unexpected events.

2) CO2 emissions vs. life expectancy
I chosed to compare these two graphs because I thought that pollution affecting our health was a major problem not just back in the 19th century, but also now. The CO2 emissions graph only showed information after 1820's because that was when the industrial revolution took place. The CO2 emissions just kept on rising and never dropped because only more factories were built, but it turns out that the CO2 emissions doesn't really kill people, it just kinda makes people's sickness even worse

3)Income per person vs. children per women
I chosed to compare these to graphs because I thought that the people that have kids might not have to hire people to help them anymore, which would save them some money, but I guess I was wrong, because for women that have more kids, their income became very slow, and I think it's because she has to pay for their kids. After the industrial revolution, the children per women dropped because most people went to work in factories and they don't have time.

Reflection

For this artifact, I compared 3 sets of graphs and found important information after looking at them. This artifact relates to Human Movement and Migration because during the industrial revolution, people migrated from working in farms or at homes to working in factories. I spent an hour working on this artifact. After creating this artifact, I learned a few facts and corrected my wrong ideas of England during the 19^th century. I think I did a ok job creating this artifact but I couldn't find more information looking at the graphs. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 4. The impact of my learning would be a 4, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

For this artifact, my and 3 other people created this video about tuberculosis. This artifact relates to “Human Health” because tuberculosis was a terrible disease back in the 19^th century. We spent about 3 days creating this video. After creating the video, I learned a lot more about tuberculosis and the medical care back in the 19^th century. I think we did a very good job creating this artifact. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 5. The impact on my level of happiness would be 5. The impact of my learning would be a 4, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 5.

Reflection 

For this artifact, I made a British Empire time line on prezi and this artifact relates to “Race Relations, The Abolition of Slavery, Segregation, and Anti-Semitism” because the time line includes some information about about slave abolition. This artifact also relates to human health, human minds, and Gender roles and the liberation of women. I spent about and hour and a half creating this artifact. After creating the artifact, I learned a lot more about the history of England, and basically how England got to its state today. I think I did a pretty good job creating this artifact because I thought about what events are important and the prezi I created looks ok. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 3. The impact on my level of happiness would be 4. The impact of my learning would be a 5, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 3.

Reflection 

For this artifact, I made a prezi to upload 20 pictures of the adventure we had in Cijin and British consulate. This artifacts relates to the “Beginnings of Globalization through Imperialism” because the British consulate itself represents the influence of the British. This artifact also relates to “Urbanization: Construction of urban cities”. I spent about 3 hours creating this artifact. After the trip and creating this artifact, I learned a lot more about the influence of the British to Taiwan and cultures of Taiwan. This artifact does not inflect my best work because although I did a good job taking the photos, I can still do a bit better on making the prezi. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 4. The impact on my level of happiness would be 5. The impact of my learning would be a 5, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 4.

Artifact #17:  Compare and Contrast Key Figures

Disraeli and Gladstone were politicians of the 19th century. Disraeli was born in London, England, on December 21, 1804, and he died on April 19, 1881. He was the British Prime Minister parliamentarian. During his career, he was the rival of William Ewart. William Ewart Gladstone was born in Liverpool, England, on December 29, 1809 and he died on May 19, 1898. He served as a Liveral statesman, scholar of Homer, Prime Minister for four times, and Chancellor of the Exchequer for four times too. Disraeli called William Ewart Gladstone a unprincipled maniac and William Ewart Gladstone called Disraeli as an mixture of envy, vindictiveness, hypocrisy, and superstition. They were rivals for their entire lives.

Reflection 
For this artifact, I basically read the information of the two politicians and wrote informaitons about them. This artifact relates to the human mind because it's what they think that caused them to be rivals. I spent 50 minutes working on the artifact. After creating this artifact, I learned more about the two politicians. This artifact does not reflect my best work because there was not enought information. For this artifact, I think the impact on the quality of my portfolio would be a 2. The impact on my level of happiness would be 3. The impact of my learning would be a 3, and the level of creativity and originality would be a 4.
